PNEUMOSTEM® aims
to treat pulmonary disorders such as bronchopulmonary
dysplasia (BPD). BPD is a lung disorder affecting
prematurely born infants, causing severe degree
of inflammation and fibrosis (tissue-scarring) in
the lungs. Pre-clinical study using animal models
of BPD showed a significant restoration of lung
tissue with decreased extent of fibrosis and number
of inflammatory cells following a single intra-tracheal
injection of PNEUMOSTEM®.
Although
overall prevalence of BPD is low, the condition
is common among prematurely born infant population
and it can be highly life-threatening. Currently,
there is no known cure for BPD and the pre-clinical
data strongly suggest that the therapeutic mechanism
of PNEUMOSTEM® in
alleviating inflammation and regenerating lung tissue
may serve as a first-in-class treatment option for
BPD.
PNEUMOSTEM® is
currently at clinical trial phase I for BDP patients
approved by Korea FDA.
